Percent to Goal Formula

The formula divides your current progress by the goal and multiplies by 100 to express the result as a percentage.

percent to goal = (progress / goal) × 100

Worked Example: Saving for a Car

Goal: save $15,500 for a new car. Current savings: $8,500.

Step 1 — divide: 8,500 / 15,500 ≈ 0.54839

Step 2 — multiply: 0.54839 × 100 ≈ 54.839%

Remaining: $15,500 − $8,500 = $7,000, which is 100 − 54.839 = 45.161% of the goal.

You are just over halfway to your savings target.

Worked Example: Project Task Completion

A project has 20 tasks. You have completed 8.

Step 1 — divide: 8 / 20 = 0.40

Step 2 — multiply: 0.40 × 100 = 40%

Remaining: 12 tasks, which is 60% of the project.

At 40% completion, 12 tasks remain before the project is done.

8,500 15,500 54.84% 7,000 (45.16%)
18 miles 26.2 miles 68.70% 8.2 miles (31.30%)
12,000 10,000 120% Goal exceeded by 2,000

Why Tracking Percent to Goal Matters

Motivation — seeing 68% complete is more motivating than knowing you have 8.2 miles left in a marathon. Percentages create a sense of how much has already been done.

Communication — reporting 54.84% of a savings goal or 40% of project tasks complete is instantly understandable to anyone, regardless of the units involved.

Forecasting — if you have reached 44% of your goal in 3 months, you are on pace to reach 100% in roughly 6.8 months total (3 ÷ 0.44 ≈ 6.8). Percent to goal feeds directly into completion-time estimates.

The percent to goal calculator shows how close you are to any target. Enter your progress and your goal, and the calculator instantly tells you what percentage you have completed — plus how much remains.
