Overview

Calculator overview

This calculator answers "what percentage is the first time of the second?" Enter two durations in any units — hours, minutes, days, or weeks — and the result appears instantly. Use it to measure how much of your workday goes to one task, what slice of the week is devoted to exercise, or any other time comparison.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. 1

Enter the first time duration (the period you want to measure).

  2. 2

Select its unit from the dropdown — hours, minutes, days, weeks, months, or years.

  3. 3

Enter the second time duration (the reference total).

  4. 4

Select the unit for the second duration. Units can be different from the first.

  5. 5

Read the percentage result. The inverted result shows what percentage the second is of the first.

What Is Time Percentage?

Time percentage expresses one time period as a fraction of another, multiplied by 100. It answers questions like "how much of my 8-hour workday did the 2-hour meeting take?" (25%) or "what portion of a week is a single day?" (about 14.29%).

The result is always relative to the second duration. If the first duration is shorter, the percentage is below 100%. If it equals the second, the result is 100%. If it is longer, the result exceeds 100%.

Example: a 45-minute break in a 6-hour shift takes up 45 / 360 × 100 = 12.5% of the shift.

Time Percentage Formula

Convert both durations to the same unit first, then apply the formula. The calculator handles unit conversion automatically.

time percentage = (first duration / second duration) × 100

Worked Example: 2-Hour Meeting in an 8-Hour Workday

Both durations are already in the same unit (hours), so no conversion is needed.

Step 1 — divide: 2 hours / 8 hours = 0.25

Step 2 — multiply: 0.25 × 100 = 25%

A 2-hour meeting takes up 25% of an 8-hour workday. The remaining 6 hours — 75% of the day — are available for other work.

Worked Example: 1 Hour vs. 1 Day (Mixed Units)

The first duration is 1 hour; the second is 1 day. Different units require conversion.

Step 1 — convert the day to hours: 1 day = 24 hours

Step 2 — divide: 1 hour / 24 hours = 0.04167

Step 3 — multiply: 0.04167 × 100 ≈ 4.167%

One hour is approximately 4.167% of a full day.

Common Time Percentages

First duration Second duration Percentage
1 hour 8 hours (workday) 12.5%
2 hours 8 hours (workday) 25%
1 hour 24 hours (day) ≈ 4.167%
6 hours 24 hours (day) 25%
8 hours 24 hours (day) ≈ 33.333%
1 hour 168 hours (week) ≈ 0.595%
1 day 7 days (week) ≈ 14.286%
1 month 12 months (year) ≈ 8.333%
30 min 2 hours 25%
45 min 3 hours 25%

Practical Uses

Work projects — a 2-hour meeting in an 8-hour workday takes 25% of available time. If you have three such meetings, 75% of your day is consumed before any focused work begins.

Exercise planning — 5 hours of exercise per week is 5 / 168 × 100 ≈ 2.98% of the week. A common recommendation of 150 minutes (2.5 hours) per week is about 1.49% of total weekly hours.

Study tracking — a student who studies 4 hours a day uses 4 / 24 × 100 ≈ 16.67% of the day on coursework.

Sleep analysis — 8 hours of sleep per night is 8 / 24 × 100 ≈ 33.33% of a day, or 56 / 168 × 100 ≈ 33.33% of a week.

The time percentage calculator finds what percentage the first time period is of the second. Enter both durations and choose their units — the calculator converts everything automatically and shows the result instantly.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What percentage of an 8-hour workday is a 2-hour meeting?
25%. Divide the meeting length by the workday length and multiply by 100: 2 / 8 × 100 = 25%.
