Discussion

The features of the calculator are divided into different features, with their respective functions for each keystroke. The keyboard functions for the TI-36 X Pro Calculator are expressed as follow,

Switching On and Off

  • The ON key turns the calculator on.
  • The combination of 2ND and OFF key pressed simultaneously turn the calculator off.
  • The off function only turns the display off but does not affect history, settings, and memory.
  • Automatic Power Down (APDTM) turns the calculator off after 5 minutes, in case of no activity.
  • Turning the calculator back on by pressing the ON key after the APD function will turn the calculator back on while retaining the settings, memory and pending operation.

Brightness and Contrast Settings

The adjustments for brightness and contrast are dependent on the brightness in the room, the angle from which it is currently being viewed and the amount of battery in the calculator. To adjust these settings, the following keys can be used

Holding down and releasing the 2ND key will bring up the settings for contrast.

Holding down “+” key will darken the current display while holding down “–“key will lighten the screen up.

Display – Home Screen

The display screen dimensions add up to 83.3 mm wide, 171.5 mm length and 15 mm height.

The home screen display enables the user to enter functions and mathematical expressions, in addition to the instructions.

The answers to equations are displayed on the home screen.

The TI-36 X Pro is capable of displaying a total of four lines, a total of 16 characters on the screen. Entries that exceeding the normal limit of 16 characters, the user can press “<” and “>” keys to navigate through the screen.

The MathPrintTM mode is capable of letting the user enter a total of four levels of functions, nested together along with various expressions. These expressions are inclusive of square roots, fractions, exponents having ^, x√y, ex, and nx.

Calculations on the home screen, depending on the user inserted space, will present the answers either to the right side of the entry or will be on the right side in a next line.

Keyboard Functions

The keypad is consist of 41 keys, along with the D-Pad.

2nd Key Functionality

The 2nd key can be used to perform multiple functions. Most of the primary functions for the keys are mentioned on them. Their secondary functions are mentioned right above it. Pressing the 2nd key will permit the user to access the secondary function for that key.

The indication of the 2nd key will be shown on the screen as “2ND“, however, in case of removing it, pressing it again will disable this feature. This can be exemplified by the example of 2ND, [√], 25 and pressing [enter] right after will provide the result of 5.

Keypad – Storing Operations

Storing operations in TI-36 X Pro calculator is quite simple and can be achieved through the use of,

2nd [op] and 2nd [set op]

The use of 2nd [set op] allows the user to store a sequence of user-defined operations.

The use of 2nd [op] recalls and utilizes the operation.

To store a user-defined operation, the user needs to make use of the following steps,

Pressing 2nd [set op]

Provide an input compromised of different numerical expressions, operators or values. These can range up to 44 characters at most.

Press [enter] will store the given operation.

Pressing 2nd [op] will bring back the stored operation, to be used to be applied to the current answer or a previous answer.

In the TI-36 X Pro Calculator, there are a total of 8 variables for the purpose of storage, namely a, b, c, d, x, y, z, and t. These memory slots are capable of storing any simple or complex number or the result of an expression in them. StatVars – This function shows a secondary menu for statistical variable results. The user can navigate through the list by pressing the up and down arrow indicated keys on the D-Pad. Pressing the [enter] to select the desired result. If this option is selected before opting 1-Var Stats, 2-Var Stats or any of the regression, a reminder will be prompted for the user.

1-Var Stats – Performs an analysis of the statistical data, ranging from 1 data set carried with 1 measured variable, x. This may include the use of frequency data as well.

2-Var Stats – Performs the analysis on paired data, ranging from the 2 datasets carried with 2 measured variables, with the values of x being an independent variable, and y as the dependent variable. This may include the frequency values as well.

LineReg ax + b – Fits in the model equation of y = ax + b to be used with least squared values in the data. This will display a (slope) and b (y-intercept). This may also show the values for r2 and r.

QuadricticReg – This fits the second-degree polynomial which is indicated as y = ax2 + bx + c. This will show the values for a, b and c. This is also inclusive of displaying the value for R2. In the case of three data points, the equation is categorized to be a polynomial fit, similarly in the case of four, five and more, it will be treated as a polynomial regression. There is a requirement of at least three points.

CubicReg – This accommodate the values of third-degree polynomials such as y = ax3 + bx2 + cx + d. This will display the values for a, b, c and d. It is also inclusive of displaying the value for R2. In the case of four points, the equation is treated as a polynomial fit, as well as in the case of five, six or more. There is a minimum requirement of having at least four points.

LineReg a + blnx – This fits in the model equation such as y = a + b ln(x) for the data that is utilizing a least squares fit and is transformed to the values of ln(x) and y. This will also be displaying the values for a, and b, as well. The values for r2 and r will also be shown in this scenario.

The limit for the equation is specified to be up to 40 characters only.

  1. The system of Linear Equation Solver

[2nd][sys-solv] will solve the system of linear equations.

An option for selecting 2×2 or 3×3 systems is available.

The results of x, y and z are saved in the variables of x, y, and z by default.

Using C:\Users\Night\Pictures\TI 36 x Pro\screen 21.PNG will toggle in between the results.

For 2×2 equation solver will solve for unique solutions only or will prompt a message informing an infinite number of solutions or no solutions, for specific cases.

For a 3×3 system of linear equation solver will also solve for unique solutions. In some cases, it will inform of infinite solutions for it or no solutions to display.

Constants

Constants allow for selection of specific constants to be posted to different areas in the calculator.

The conversion menu allows for the conversion of almost 20 conversions in total. 40 in the case of converting both ways.

Accessing the conversions menu requires the user to press [2nd][convert].

Pressing the up and down indicated keys on the D-Pad will allow navigating in between the conversion types.

The TI-36 X Pro Calculator being an answer to Casio’s and Sharp’s latest addition, is designed to compete in terms of storing, processing and time management for the students. The TI-36 X Pro is specially designed to permit users to input expressions as they would normally write it down on their notebooks (Machines 2018). In a more descriptive sense, it can be related to the way exponents are written in the form of superscripts, whereas fraction bars are represented with the inclusion of expressions.
